Default Unusual fan motor noise after engine shut off 2001 audi tt

2000 1.8t tt Quattro , 118,000 miles.
After engine shut off, a high pitched fan noise from the front passenger side of engine compartment, somewhere beneath the air filter (I think).

The cooling fans are off. When I disconnect the battery it shuts down. I reconnect the battery no noise yet after starting the car shutting it off the noise returns. I let it run for about ten minutes then disconnected the battery again so it wouldn't kill the battery.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
