Default 12V Performance?

So I just picked up a '95 90 12v and have a few questions. I have dug around the forums a while and found some information, but its very contradictory and vague.

For example, I hear a lot about S3 this and S3 that, S3 MAF, S3 velocity stack, S3 intake boot. What exactly are these, or more accuratley, where can I get them, how much gain, and what do they cost? And XTB? I know a lot about engines and power, I build race VW 16V engines, but the terminology is new here. Im not looking to build a track screamer, I just want to see what options are out there for my engine.

Part numbers, website, size, specs for intake hoses and bends?

Also, what experiences with plug wires/plugs? Nology hotwires? Stock? Bosch copper super plugs, platinum +2?

Thanks.

P.S. any detailed pics would be a great help.

Sounds like you want everything in a nutshell. So here it is...search the forums. You even have the benefit of having experience building race engines that few of us have. Even if we all answered you now it would still be contradictory. On another note, people seem more receptive when specific questions are posted, with some attention to the information. I for one think it's a hell of a lot easier and productive to answer question from someone who has looked at the foundation of information first. Good luck.

Not really looking for everything in a nutshell, I just like to get a clear view of the whole picture before I step in and start changing things. Saves me the trouble of having to change things out multiple times and spend more time and money than necessary.

Anyways, heres a specific question, S3 MAF. From what I have read, Mance is no longer marketing his performance products, which is a real bummer. So, its up to me to modify my own parts. So I go get some 3" ID silicone hose and some 90's for my intake hoses, but what about the MAF? Is there a different part, do you bore out the housing? Not too much experience with these before, mostly ITB standalone, dual webbers, and CIS injection systems.

Also, how good is, say, the TAP-1 or Blausport big bore TB compared to the XSTB? worth the money?

Just email Mance. He still makes alot of things, which ones exactly would be a question for him. Just make sure you put "Audi" in the subject line or his spam filter will delete it.

I did my own MAF, but it takes some extra work to keep it from leaning out your engine. Mance's are still better.

No other bored throttle bodies even compare to Mance's "X" series.

Default nothing's suggestion is right-on for determening what Mance still makes.

As stated, Mance's products, designed and created my him, are simply put the best products you can find for the money, period. Mance places such attention to detail, it's next to impossible for the average Joe to outperform Mance's products. You may come as close to these products as you dare but you will need fluid-flow knowledge and lots of time with a flowbench. I say you can come as close as you dare because Mance can only apply the laws of physics - nothing more. So with some knowledge and tools you can design couplers for the 3" silicone hoses offered by the companies stated in this forum before. That would complete a 3" INTAKE KIT.

As far as the MAF goes, it's a bored out MAF housing with a modified hot-wire sensor ending in 471A. STFA for MAF 471A in the "12V Development" forum and it should point you in the right direction for what to look for the upgraded MAF. I bought one used from one of the members here, so I lucked out. If you have the right vehicle, you may incorporate one of Mance's velocity stacks so you could eliminate the restrictive MAF screen. STFA for that subject, too. That would complete the MAF END OF THE INTAKE.

I also remember reading that Mance claimed he had gotten close to the 100% efficiency point with his TB. I also read they make a cool sound of some sort because he increases the velocity through the TB enough to modify the side ports into the TB, creating a whistling sound. That would bring you closer to the cylinder head portion of the equation. I have the Blaufernuegen ported TB. I saw good gains with it but Mance's should be superior.

The IM porting is another step closer to the cylinder head. This will help with the flow tremendously if done right. There are many re-entrant intake points to work with as well as smoother intake walls to benefit from.

Finally on to the cylinder head. The heads have a restriction to air flow and fuel spray pattern - major power robbers and backrire producers. Take care of those, too. Besides the typical valve angle jobs available, undercut valve stems and bigger valves would benefit greatly.

Pretty much this mess of info I am giving is through my perspective only and may be wrong in many ways so search for yourself and don't take what I just said as law. Especially since I have only accomplished less than half of these things I just mentioned. Mance would be a more valuable source of info but it can be hard to track him down. If you basically look for all the possible places to recover flow energy, you will be set. Blockages take energy to bypass, air turning does the same, restrictions and rough walls all rob energy. Intake transitions can be incorporated with smooth transitions to recover pressure energy and so on.

Sorry I blabbed on so much. This is the first time I have ever attempted to sum everything up and I will probably be corrected at some point after this post so keep an eye out.

Thanks for the reply. I sent Mance an email yesterday regarding some of the above parts. I did a bit of research on TFA and found a lot of useful information. I performed the MAF mod yesterday, reset my ECU, and 125 miles later I started feeling the benefits. I would love to have an S3 MAF and TB, though, as I know what I can do with a saw and a dremel pales in comparison to something with as much work and research into it as Mance's products.

Default Go for one of Mance's RS3 MAF's, I think he got 20% or 30% better flow over..

the S3 MAF which is incredible considering what the S3 already flows. I picked up a RS3 MAF not too long ago and technically with my IM, cyl heads, cams and EM still stock I shouldn't have noticed much of a difference, however it improved the performance and smoothed out the idle dramatically.

IMO without question you should also go for the SXTB(700+ CFM) or if you've got the dough a RSXTB(1000+ CFM?). The SXTB and RSXTB use a "S" core TB from an A6. The primary venturi outlet is bigger increasing flow capacity. The TAP and Blau TB's are only sleeved which is still better than stock but the sharp edges from the sleeving hinder the airflow. Mance's XTB series are flow bench tested and the attention to detail is second to none. There is a pic of a SXTB in my poster to give you an idea.

There are workshops in the archives or hosted by other AW'ers on porting & polishing the intake manifold and cylinder heads. Gun-drilled AAH cams will also give you more zip.

Welcome and good luck with your project.
