Bring on the power mods!
I've had my 1995 90 Quattro for about 3 months now. I'm ready to start putting on parts to get myself some more power. I still plan to finish the tune up that I've already started, but I want to start thinking what I should put on my car.
My friend says that starting with the exhaust is the best way to go, but I don't exactly have the money to drop on a Stebro cat back exhaust. So thats out of the question.
What does peak my interest are the parts offered by Abnormally Asperated. They seem to have a lot of bang for the buck and are very reasonably priced. I've checked out their website, but it seems that their product list isn't complete.
So I am asking you guys to give me suggestions on where to start. I'd like to concentrate on the intake including the throttle body. I know AA offers different types, but which is best for a street application? Whats up with the VS and bored out MAF? Am I missing anything else?
Thanks!

start with the VS and the MAF
Best bang for the buck. Then get the throttle body, then the silicone hose kit.
Actually it really doesnt matter which order you do it in, its the sum of the total that makes a big difference. Thats just the route i'm going with them.

Please explain the VS and the MAF.
How do they work? The VS looks like some sort of funnel. Does it increase the velocity of the intake air?
And whats up with the MAF? I've heard that changing from a barndoor to a hotwire system results in high gains (from removing the intake restriction, but what is done with the MAF to inprove performance?
Do I have options with these kits? Like are there different "stages" of MAFs available?
Thanks.

Answers..... <edit>
"Does it increase the velocity of the intake air?" Bingo. You got it. Also allows removal of the restrictive MAF screen as the VS serves the same purpose of the screen buy smoothing out the incoming airflow.
The sampling tube and associated "column" is removed (see attached pics). Also, a more aggressive taper is machined into the housing. This by itself will make your car run a little leaner but not dangerously so as long as you car is in good mechanical condition. However, UrS4 now includes 10 o-rings (2 of 5 different sizes) which you can put in the sensor opening which richens up the mixture. The different sizes actually allow you to adjust the AF ratio depending which ID o-ring you use. Do a search for "o-ring" in this forum for more infomation. The Stage 3 MAF is currently the only MAF he offers.

CHECK OUT THIS INCREASE!
9/13/03 - The previous milage just before
installation of UrS4's ported MAF plus
Stage 2 Hose Kit = 14.6 MPG.
The 962 miles since installation of the MAF
= 17.1 MPG. A 17% increase!
I had previously installed UrS4's CAI & VS.
Before all that, I had installed TDL's
bored TB.
3/7/04 - 964 miles from 2/4/04-3/17/04
and the average mileage = 17.2. In Dec. 03
I had to have the heads rebuilt & also Ported
& Polished them at the same time. I continue
to get better milage.
