Engine Temperature

Engine Temperature
'92 100CS won't heat up. Engine Temp gauge doesn't move, Oil Temp gauge barely moves off 60, and heater won't heat. Replaced Thermostat with Audi OEM, but still no changes. There are no coolant leaks. Removed & tested ETC Sensor and it was right on specs. What am I missing, why won't the car heat up properly? I'm stumped.

If the outside temp is low & A/C is on, your temp gauge will show low. But if you're...
getting heat and the upper rad hose is hot, your car is normal. My '96 A6 does the same thing w/ outside temp is ~40 and lower. If I turn off the A/C compressor, and run up a fairly steep hill, I can get the temp gauge to move more to the 11:00 normal position.

Re: Engine Temperature
Thanks for the responses. The upper hose is warm but not hot. I have not seen the fans kick on. Climate control is off, the compressor is not running. I bought the car new 13 years ago (186k miles), and I know exactly where those gauges should be reading. This condition is not normal, and I'm concerned about doing some real damage if I don't get this engine running at normal temperature. Any other suggestions?
