Gas Light

Gas Light
I just purchased a 1997 A4 2.8. At this point it has had nothing but issues, I have owned it for 2 months and drove it only about 2 weeks. I bought it off someone who did not tell the whole truth about the car. Right now the car is ripped apart and I am trying to fix everything. So far I got a llitek exshuast, lliteck cool air intake, new ball joints, oil pan, heat sensor, oil sensor, timming belt, water pump, bearings, and the list goes on. I am workin now to replace my o2 sensors. But this is my question, when my gas tank is full it is fine, but as soon as it goes below hafe it sucks. Depending on hiting the gas or taking my foot off it the bell will ring and the gas light turns on for a few seconds. Then the switch goes back to normal, this happens alot. But it is fine above hafe a tank. You think this is my o2 sensor, so after I change them it will be fine or do you think it is something else? Or you think I should just keep a full tank? Haha Thanks alot for the help

why do you think the O2 sensor and gas tank are related?
Because they are not.
Sounds like the float is goofy on the fuel pump. Your gas light (your tank is almost empty light) has nothing at all to do with the O2's. If those were going bad, you'd get a CEL (Check Engine Light)and the only way you's know is if you hooked it up to a VAG-COM or brought it in for a diagnostic.

You need a new fuel level sending unit. Same thing happened to me. Easy to replace. See my link.

By the way, you may be able to repair the old sender instead of buying a new one but you won't know
until you pull the old one out. I had the exact symptoms and what happened was the wire on it broke so when the tank was full it would make contact but when the tank got low it would only intermittently make contact. You could solder a new wire on there to fix it. Common problem.

Re: why do you think the O2 sensor and gas tank are related?
It's not that I thought they were related. Just trying to get the specifics on what is wrong, feels like it is something new everyday. I am not a master machanic by any means, just bought a car with lots of problems and trying to fix it to my needs as cheaply as possible. Thanks for you help guys.
