Default hole in side of bell housing A4 Q automatic 2.8l '97

I noticed an uncovered hole on the driver side of the bell housing, there is even a small screw hole near it as if something is suppose to cover it (near where it mates with engine see photo). This picture was taken through the driver side wheel well with the wheel removed. For reference the shiny item in the photo is the brake rotor. Is this suppose to be open like this? A4 '97 Quattro Automatic 2.8L.

Default Negative Ghost Rider, the CPS and Holddown pin are inserted into the block, not the

transmission bellhousing.
