I think you are talking about lower than he is
I've heard people complain about lifter noise when the were still half a quart above minimum. Of course, I don't ever let it get that low. ;-)

mine are dead-quiet til I hit a quart low. Then it starts. At 2 qts low they "knock"...
Only happened once as it's a knock you don't want to ignore. But now I use the "clatter" on engine startup as my hint when to add a quart.

well you have to remember I went from less than a quart every 3,000 miles...
to over a quart every 350 miles, overnight! Trust me, thats the kind of surprise that can catch even the clinically over-attentive totally off guard.

I remember that well
I used to have a problem with low oil pressure when driving my Scirocco hard, and if the oil level wasn't near the max mark.
On my A4 I hear valve tick only at idle and if the engine is hot. Other than that, even the injectors are louder than the valve train.
