Default Mounted that "TDL style" bored throttle body on a friends daughter's 97A4 yesterday...

we did some 15-60mph 2nd gear pulls before and after. Before throttle body best we could get was a 10.16 seconds (remember I'm at 6,000ft elevation). After we installed the ported throttle body our best was 9.45 seconds. Certainly not in Stage 3's realm but removing almost 3/4 of a second aint bad as I know of no other mod that'll give that much improvement for less than 2.25x that much. There's certainly NOTHING else in the $100 or less range that'll touch it.

We only put it on the car to test it. When he left I had $155 and his daughter's old throttle body (he bought a VS too which got him to 9.28 seconds).

Just shows to go ya the more I learn the less I know. Truth is on a purely dollars-to-HP gained basis the cheapo throttle body being less than 1/4 the price of the S3 yields over 35% of the S3 TB's net gain. As with most things it's always easy to find some initial increase or gain out of any part or component. It's getting those last few ponies wrung out of it thats difficult and expensive.

I doubt there's significant, if any HP differentials between this TB and a straight sleeved one. Since this one is bored SOOO much larger than TDL did em and the straight sleeved ones have a similar/identical bore I.D. to this one once sleeved. I have to build up the outside walls with epoxy putty before boring due to cutting thru the outer walls which allows me to go with a much larger bore than the traditional bored non/sleeved units. And even if it's a thousandth or two of an inch smaller bore than the sleeved ones it's still 1/3 the cost and I'm likely to more than compensate for the difference with the shaping/contouring I do to get air into the TB with minimal turbulence and boundary layer disturbances! And I'm not known as the "cheapest" game in town but this may well end up being a very viable alternative to standard sleeved throttle bodies at a price that suits everyone.

Once I've got a few of these out there and people reporting back it'll be very interesting to see where it leads. And it beats the socks off spending 14+ hours on a Stage 3 unit for me!!
