Default O2 sensor removal

Of course, I need to remove/replace the O2 sensor on the driver's side of my '97 A6 with the 12V 2.8V6...
I can reach it of course, but applying adequate torque to the baked-on sensor/manifold connection has me stumped... I can't get enough room to turn a rachet one single click...Do I have to take the top of the motor off? or is there away to reach it without disassembling the motor?!

You may over-torque your ratchet during initial removal while you are trying to break it loose. Use a power bar instead, at least until you get it turning. On one occasion I had a friend help by heating it with a torch first. Engine dissassembly not required.

Do you go at it from underneath, or from the top?

Default Thank you

Hmm, from the top eh!?! Seems like I will be fighting a lot of hoses(heater core), brake booster, and the cam position sensor is right there in the way, and the coolant pipe that runs along the back of the engine....

The only difficulty I recall on the driver's side was that the O2 wrench I was using required a little relieving on the pedestal grinder to fit onto the sensor correctly.

When I did mine recently I had no problem on the passenger side but the drivers side was a bitch. Got it with heat ,an extension and an impact gun . A O2 sensor socket just turned .I had to get an impact socket that would fit over the old sensor. Slowly putting the rattle gun on broke it loose. They had to have been the original sensors .
