Default P1402 Code

Hey I have a 97 2.8 5 speed quattro with 106K on it. I just did an EGR cleaning/intake manifold/TB, valley pan gasket and I can;t seem to get rid of the P1402 code. I had 3 other EGR related codes that are now cleared but this one is stumping me.

P1402 is the (Bentley) termed "EGR Valve Cir Short to B+".

Can anyone give me an idea on the remedy? Should I vaccum test the EGR to see if the mechanical side works or am I looking at a bad EGR solenoid?

TIA?

Don't bother with the mechanical stuff, because this code could only result from the solenoid's electrical circuit. I would start by disconnecting the solenoid, and measuring the coil resistance. I checked my '96 and measured about 30 Ohms. I don't know, but I would suspect this code results from too much resistance, for instance a dirty or loose connector. I'm guessing about the following: The EGR circuit when "off" still shorts a test signal to ground through the solenoid coil, but if the connection is bad, the signal floats high and gives the "Short to B+" which means battery +. Clean the contacts (I just spray some WD-40 on both connections and let the solvent evaporate), measure the resistance, then plug together and test.

Thanks for the advice Turbo...My solenoid tested out at 28.7 ohms. I cleaned the contacts on the solenoid and on the plug with fine emery cloth and electroninc cleaner to shine them up well. Plugged it back up and still tossing a P1402. Cleared it and drove a bit still pops up P1402. I then took off the ground to the cluster of wires to the ICV, EGR and IAB solenoids and scuffed them and re-grounded. Same thing P1402.

COuld the solenoid test out ok (ohm within 25-35 spec) but still be tripping the code? Do I need to test the wiring back to the ECU? <-UGH......? Or look at a new solenoid?

Your solenoid resistance looks fine, compared to my car, so I would forget it. Possibly the connector at the ECU is corroded, I've never checked mine, but it seems like there is high-resistance somewhere. Those ground connections on the intake manifold and car body near the coolant reservoir, try cleaning those too.
