Default Stupid Poll Time!

How many of you have ever used bubble gum inside a socket to hold a bolt in order to get it into a hard to reach place? Any other weird tricks? One of the crew chiefs I knew when I worked on the F-16 once super-glued a nut to his finger. He didn't have enough clearance between the panel & engine to get any tools in, so he decided he'd rather use the super glue than pull the engine. One of my tricks when working with RTV or the like, is to use spit & smooth it out with my finger. I know this all sounds stupid, but as we used to say in the military: If it's stupid & it works, it's not stupid. Time for your strange tips or experiences!!!

Default Probably been done before - Magnet on a string

lost a nut or bolt down into an area where I couldn't reach......went to the kitchen, found a strong magnet, and 4 feet of string....went fishing for the hardware and got it

Hmm, I've magnetized most of my sockets by now...

Default Magnetism doesn't work on aluminum bolts.

I found out when I dropped one in the belly of a jet & spent 8 hours trying to find it.

Default Do we have any of those?

How about using a little modeling clay (Plasticene) in a socket? That stuff sticks maybe even better than gum.

Default That would work too

I haven't run across any aluminum bolts on the Audi yet, they're very common on Gulfstream corporate jets though (unfortunately). All of their spacers are aluminum.

I used masking tape to loosely attach a bolt to the socket when doing the Camaro's water pump.

When something's not perfect, I like to say "close enough for government work"
