Wheel bearings longevity ?

Wheel bearings longevity ?
I once heard that roller bearings, no matter usage, would last no more than 10 years, mostly because of the grease duration.
Is that true ?
BTW - in the 1996 A4 the bearings are sealed or can be cleaned/lubricated periodically?
Would it be wise just replace them ? (car has 52000 km)
TIA, Jorge

My car is 11 years old with 155,000. I had one fail under warranty at 35,000 miles.
The other three are still good. I check them everytime I rotate my tires.
I know they are potentially a source of unreliability. My A4 is garaged 99% of the time and this is a fairly mild climate here.
Not real cold or dusty.
I wonder about it too and and actually set aside money to take care of if need be.

I think it depends on where you live, and perhaps haw hard you drive.
I live in climate with lots of snow, salt and slush. over the last 6 years I put 80 k on my car and had to do the bearings twice on the passanger side and once on the drivers side.

well, I found that my bearings usually died in mid winter ....my bearings are sealed too
when the seal on the bearings dies over the summer and then water/salt get's in and we get the nasty wwooooooooo sound...
which brings me to another point, all my bearings are sealed !

unsealed Audi wheel bearings!?! Umm ya might wanna double-check since there is no such thing...
well since the NSU days in late 60's. Unsealed bearings would leak molten grease at high brake temps or bearing seizures causing catastrophic brake failures as there are no grease caps used on sealed roller bearings to retain grease inside the hub assemblies as on older cars with serviceable hubs/and taper bearings.
You couldnt drive 10 continuous miles with unsealed bearings. You'd have grease EVERYWHERE on pads, calipers, rotors, axles, tires and wheels!!! Of course they're sealed!
