Default My Dell "D series" laptop which I just got for work recently has a serial port which is nice
because I have the shareware version of VAGCOM on it and leave the VAG cable in my car in case I need a code pulled and I don't have my personal laptop with me.

I second the PCMCIA serial card. If you want "the best" that's the best solution. You may be able to get a serial to USB adapter working but they are sketchy sometimes.

If I had to do it all over again, I wouldn't trade my 12v for a 1.8T. A 2.7T maybe....
