Default 2001 A6 2.7t Couple of problems

Hi all,

I have been browsing this forum for a while but never posted as I normally have found the problem and I dont know too much about cars!

Before I ask my questions I notice people like to know as much as possible about the car, I own a 2001 C5 Audi A6, Quattro 2.7t, 230bhp version. I have done around 140k miles and never really had any problems until!!!

I ran a VAGCOM report which threw up a 17861 Exhaust Gas Temp Sensor 1 (G235): Open Short to Plus P1453 35-10 Intermittent, which after a much searching lead me here to this post:

https://www.audiworld.com/tech/eng73.shtml

So, I think went online and looks for the parts etc, and discovered that some recommend that I replace both and some say just do one blar blar, anyway I thought I would go and have look in detail at my car, now knowing where the problem lies before doing anything else...

Now this is the fun bit, I opened the bonnet, I do check my levels alot etc, so I am shocked ive not seen this before, to find a pipe unattached from SOMETHING, what I dont know, my question is can anyone tell me?!?

I have attached some photos, of the pipe itself and where the end terminates (located directly under the G12 coolant res)

This fist image is the "broken" or cut end of the pipe:

The second is the location which is terminates, its the L shaped pipe, directly under the G12 coolant res.

Could anyone tell me what it is and what it does. The car is running perfectly OK, would this have a factor on the G235 error on the EGT?

Many thanks

For the parts check on ecstuning.com I think they are having sales on them
and as for the "cut hose" that's the over flow line for the coolant tank.

Also people on the forum tend to know so much about their cars due to dealers charging 120 dollars per hour for labor.

Owning an Audi is like having an exotic girlfriend; take care of them and you'll get the ride of your life but, mistreat and neglect them and they'll make you wish you never met.

Many thanks, you know what, I took the coolant tank lid off today and blew down the pipe and came to that conclusion!!

Yes, this is a little project car for me, I have already done a bit of work, replacing some the ABS sensors, the Air Bag ECU, and now it seems need to replace both of the EGT sensors.

I got the car with the fault (knowingly) really cheap, so things are looking up...

I have just had all the body work resprayed so she looks the part at least

Thanks for the info and I will check out that website.
