about cooldown
Hi, everyone.
Thanks for much for your replies on my earlier question!
Here is another. It's probably a very obvious question for a lot of you, but I was just wondering, why is the cooldown of turbo(s) after a long drive so important, and from what I heard, turbos that are built after 2000+ don't really need the cooldown?
How long should I keep the engine running if the cooldown is necessary?
Thanks so much again~!

I always cool down.
I don't know the science of it, but the turbos get hot, and they need the intercoolers to bring fresh air in to cool them. If you just turn off your car while it is still hot and leave the hood closed, the engine begins getting hotter than when it was running. The closed hood, and lack of fresh ventilation traps the heat and a very mild form of heat soak occurs. I'd rather cool down, and not find out what high heat and expanding metal results in. When I am done driving, I usually stop the car, leave it running, jump out and pop the hood, stand around for 1-2 min and then shut it off. It's usually significantly cooler to the touch when it's all said and done.

"Pop the hood" you got to be kidding!
You'll get better airflow over the turbos with it closed. It not air that cools, its water and oil. If you have been flat footing it let it cool for a couple minutes. If you've cruising the interstate 85 or less, taking it easy of the ramp and easing into a parking area and shutting it down after you gotten your belts off and checking you hair, it will be OK.

Cooldown is all about how you've driven in the last minute or so.
if you've been slamming gears and hitting 20 psi, sure, sit there for a few minutes.
if you've been granny'ing , 30 seconds to a minute is fine.
turbo failure can happen when the heat from the turbo/engine bay heatsoaks and warps the shaft, causing the blades to hit the housing
as for turbos not needing cooldown, considering they spin 10x the speed that your engine does, i'd say they need cooldown
