Just did it, PITA, pay somebody to do it. 10 hour job with all the right tools, and LIFT.

Default Actually easier to remove the engine

I replaced mine when I went to upgrade turbos. I didn't have a lift and looked easier by just taking engine out.

Default Given the correct tools AND A LIFT, I dont think it would be easier to pull the engine if all

you were doing was a clutch...I did mine this summer, dropped the tranny. It was kind of a PITA, and I have a lift in my garage, so this made it much better. Great learning experience, and very rewarding when you are done and everything works! But I will tell you, I had to use a transmission jack adapter plate on my floor jack cuz I dont have a trans jack...So I had to lower the lift down to within the height to be able to use the floor jack to lower it out of the car. I unbolted everything with it up in the air, and only had to be on the creeper for about 15 minutes while actually pulling the trans out...and let me tell you, that sucked bad enough for 15 minutes. I would in no way ever even consider doing this on jack stands. There are some bolts in there that are hard to get at, and standing up was hard enough to get at them. Just for you reference to compare, last winter I attempted to remove my downpipes to gut them and reinstall them on jackstands. Me and a buddy spent about 3-4 hours under the car and the only thing we accomplished was getting 6 of the 8 bolts of the turbo flange. When I took them out for the tranny pull, on the lift, about an hour and I had them out! But really, if you dont have a lift, I pitty you if you attempt this. But if you do have a lift, I would suggest doing it yourself. 10-15 hour job total. Mine took alot longer with tool delays that I forgot I needed until I had started work on it. But on the positive side, the dealership quoted me 2700 for a new s4 clutch and pp, flywheel and labor. For about 800 I got a fidanze LWFW, an RS4 clutch and PP. When you think about it, that's alot of dough. Paid for the better part of 2/3 of my lift! And for your info, I have an S4 not an A6, but I have seen the A6's getting a clutch at the audi dealer and it is very similar. Hope this helps you

Default Ugh. Local indy quoted me $400. Used to be an audi tech..

I bet you that price changes. Just like my timing belt job doubled once they dug in.. Thanks for the advice. Last clutch I replaced myself was on a 72 datsun 240z. lol. You can change the oil in that car from above with the car on the ground. LOTS of room.
