Default 2.8 oil pan

Seems like most use just sealer and no gasket.
what is the right way? Yes or no gasket?

level/temp sensor. Don't know if level works, but temp does not, so I might as well change it. Any issue with the generic VW part? Seems the start around $12 and go up to $80.

When I replaced the oil pan on my Passat I used the gasket that came with it and used a thin coat of black rtv. Its been 6 years and no leaks. As far as the sensor i've used Meyle brand without issue.
