4.2 spun bearing at 60k
My father has a 2000 A6 4.2 which has been meticulously maintained since new (oil changes every 5k and he drives like grandpa at this point) which recently spun a rod bearing.
Car is at our favorite independent, and the motor is out of the car and mostly torn down.
What makes this really strange, is that neither the rod nor the crank journal show any bluing or discoloration, yet the bearing completely disintegrated. Obviously, there is metal all throughout the engine, and unfortunately, the affected cylinder's bore is pretty badly scuffed. Pretty much no way to do any sort of rebuild on this block.
So, as far as I see it (for the record, I'm a Porsche guy, hence the new account here) is either obtaining a salvaged motor from a wrecked car, or getting a short block from Audi and building it. Clearly the car is out of warranty, but I would somewhat expect some good will from Audi on this, given the unusual circumstances. Porsche has done several goodwill engine replacements due to M96 RMS and IMS failures.
Since we are looking for a motor for this car, does anyone have a source for a lower mileage motor that was salvaged?
Any other input you could give would certainly be appreciated.
Thanks
Patrick
