Default `00 1.8tq Rear Brakes, @23k mi..looks more worn than front...

I was visually inspecting the rear brake pads w/o removing my rear wheel and noticed that they are really thin. The front brakes are like 4.5x as thick as my rear brakes. Did the front and the back start at the same size? I would think that the front would wear before the back twice before I have to change the rear. Comments? Oh yeah, rear wheels are normally cleaner than the front. that would suggest that the front should be wearing more than the rear.

Default Normally fronts go out b4 rears (more)......

so you may like to check that your parking brake is not binding, thus holding the calipers against the rotor and wearing the pads prematurely. I'm assuming you have yet to replace the front pads, right? If you have not yet replaced the front pads and the rear pads are worn, it would suggest a problem with the calipers binding. You can check the movement by removing the wheel and then releasing the parking brake - the wheel should be stuck with the brake on and free with the brake off. If the calipers are binding you will not be able to turn the wheel when it is off the ground, even when the brake is released.

Default If the calipers were binding, he would already have warped rotors...

On some cars (not sure about the A4), it is perfectly normal to see the rears wear first. You are correct, the front brakes do most of the braking, but other factors (pad thickness, pad material, and surface area of the pad) will affect the wear rate of the brake pads.

On my last car, the rear brakes would need to be replaced twice as often as the fronts (pad's were thinner, smaller, and used a softer material).

Valid point - assuming no mechanical problems then it's time to replace them due to normal wear
