other factors
Turbo charged or not? effects how performance upgradeable it is and how much it costs to do that.
Gas Mileage
Exterior styling (I think the x-type is so/so, the 3 series is my favorite look, altho NOT the new 2002, and the C-class I'm not overly fond of. The S60 is ugly compared to all of them IMHO. Not sporty looking at all)

We make fun of the rice burners (Civics, Metros, Hyundais) coz' we've a turbo or maybe a *nice*
interior. A BMW, Mercedes, Jag, Volvo, Lexus looks at us 4 bangers w/ a turbo with the same attitute. Certainly I am generalizing, but it certainly holds some truth. Keep it under 30k and we got a pretty good deal. Live w/o the leather and power seats and a little engine. That all mighty turbocharged 4. A few years from now, I am willing to bet you won't be in a 4 banger turbo or not. I know I won't

After tracking the car in the rain, I won't own a car without AWD
The extra grip, in all weather is a tremendous boon to performance, despite the weight. Around where emkay and I are, its seems like every time we get a storm, 99% of those FWD cars are in the ditch, while im cruising along without a care in the world. And no, you're not getting shafted by Audi. A BASE 325xi is 29k, while you can get a 2001 1.8T with metalic paint, leatherette, Xenon, Quattro, and cold for that price. Thats Audi/VWs thing. They basically offer the same car for less than their competition.

you'll notice everyone is trying to put put cars in this sub $30k-30K range..
Mercedes is jumping into the market now. BMW can't really compete in that market when you factor the options. A 325 with the options to match and Audi, and figuring the fact you can never get a deal on a new beamer, rules even that car out. I'm not sure what the jag costs or a comparable equipped S60...
Wether it be a 5sp or an auto, the Audi tends to give one of the best bang for buck deals all around.
I would have rather had a 325, but for another $3k? Nope.

A turbo 4 kicks a**!
I have a 215hp, 255ftlb torque car that gets 27-30mpg on the highway! Do that with a V8, or even a 6! Its gonna be tough. You might have more power, and a "smoother" engine, but I can fill my tank with premium for 20 bucks, and I have a 15 gallon tank with a 400+ mile range. That important to me. I love my 4 cylinder.
