1.8 bearing issues
I work at a bosch service center, and I am ase master certified. Just curious about a recurring problem we are seeing. To keep it brief, in the last week, we have had 3 VAG cars with 1.8 turbo motors that were trash. 2 need engines, one got an oil pump to quiet the valvetrain, but the turbo can't take normal pressure anymore and it smokes like the car in "Christine". One customer swears they changed oil every 3k, but the crank damage and sludge tell a different story. Sludge buildup and a problem with the cam tentioner breaking up and cloging the oil pump screen are recurring themes on a mechanics forum I belong to. Mileage on the cars ranges from 43k to 120k. I'd like to know what this forum knows about the problem, and what causes it.

At 67K miles, I replaced the Valve Cover Gasket. While I was in there, I saw very little wear ...
on the Cam Chain Tensioner. The Tensioner rubbing block looked like it would last for at least 250K miles.
I've used Mobil 1 10w-30 (last year switched to 5w-30), since the first 200 miles (that's right, I didn't listen to that "don't change-out the break-in stuff for 5K miles" line).
Vic 99.5 1.8T Tip APR Stg 1 since 10K miles, currently 68K mi.
