I have a 2001 1.8t A4. A month ago the car (has 101k) started to make a noise (wet fart/exhaust sound). I had the down pipe replaced (flex joint was shot). This did not fix the problem. My mechanic said it sounds like the cam chain tensioner, this was replaced, it still makes the noise. This noise happens (more noticeable) when the car is in gear, and under load. He said it might be a wrist pin on Cyl 4 (the noise is coming from the rear of the engine), or some other internal part. torque converter? the noise does change pitch frequency /w engine speed.
What else could it be? Any ideas? The car has always ran M1 5w30 or (0w30)
I had the almost same exact symptoms and have done the cam chain tensioner replacement as well...I found in my case the problem to be a bad hydraulic timing belt tensioner...(could have sworn that the noise was coming from the back of the engine) Mine was not dampening the belt anymore the "shock absorver action" was non existent. This will cause the timing belt to "vibrate/resonate" at certain engine speeds-in my case between 1200 to 2K RPMs or so...
Check this part out- easy to check in our cars..

thanks.
Can't help with noise, but your not running the correct oil. At this point it probably won't make a difference, if the noise is related to engine wear, but for the future run a VW502 approved oil like M1 0w-40, GC, or a 5w-40 syn.
I know you said you replaced the down pipe, but I wonder if the manifold is cracked or you have an exhaust leak still. That is exactly the type of thing that makes that wet sound fart noise but it will only do that under load when the leak needs extreme pressure to be heard.
If you have a wrist pin noise it will change when you unplug the coil wire to the cylinder that has the bad pin.
I had two mechanics look at the car. Both had similar diagnosis, bad wrist pin/connecting rod. So the car was traded in, for new Subaru Outback. Going to miss my old car, but the new one is much more family (space!) friendly.
