Strange engine noise (almost like diesel)

Need help with strange noise from 98 A4 Q. with 84K ( timing belt has not been changed) Noise started this morning,appears to occure at front of engine just below plastic engine cover, Noise increase with engine speed even in neutral.its not a sharp metalic sound.Oil level ok. Could it be the timming belt breaking appart

Which engine do you have? It sounds more like the cam chain tensioner than anything..

Had same thing...check alternator...mine became noisey as ****

was even told it sounded like a deisel. Had it replced

At 84K you might want to change that timing belt as well...

Mine snapped at 94,000. I would have had it changed at 80K but my mechanic gave me bad advice.

I would actually start here. Don't bother diagnosing any noises until the TB job is done

if it isn't any of the timing components making the noise, you still run the risk of losing your head or engine. If you make costly repairs, then it fails, you just kicked yourself square in the crotch.
