1.8t block interchangability?
I have a friend who has a 2001 1.8t. can anyone confirm which years blocks are interchangeable? I thought pretty much all the lower ends were the same and the heads were different?
I have found several engines with broken T-belts for under $200, and since he has a good head it would be a pretty cheap swap since you would change the T-belt, water pump etc anyway. these engines are a 99 and 00

The early engines had an external water pump; the later engines have an internal
water pump driven by the camshaft belt. Early engines are coded as AEB and ATW;
later engines are coded AWM. All 2001 cars that I have seen are AWM and I have seen some 2000 cars that were either AWM or ATW.

I have to check but I think that AWM is throttle drive by wire whereas AEB and ATW are drive by cable which makes for lots of differences. I have not tried that swap but have done A4 and A6 2.8l V6 swaps with surprises (not good ones).

I don't remember but I think it is drive by wire as well? but I want to use this head and all the intake, turbo etc,and just swap to another block. this engine has a knock but everything else is good. also this car is a Auto, will a manual fit? can I just swap flywheels or do I need a Auto?

Everything from 2000 up is DBW, this includes the ATW, AWM and AMB.
The AEB/ATW are a 058 block and the AWM/AMB are a 06A block.
The 20v head found on all of them can be swapped to the other. Difference is the AEB is a large port with no SAI flange, the rest are all small port heads with the SAI flange. The AWM/AMB heads from the 06A block have the VVT cam chain tensioner.
You could swap in a 058 block but you would have to include all of the accesories that came with it. Might have to swap the knock sensors.

thanks, this is what I thought, that the heads are swapable between blocks.
but it sounds like what you are saying is the alternator and A/C pump will not fit from the 01 AWM car to a 99 or 2000 block.
and It also sounds like I can't swap in a complete 2000 engine because the sensors won't work and it doesn't have vvt, but can I swap in the VVT tensioner from his 01 into a 2000 engine?
Basically where I am at is I can't find a AMW engine around here for less then $1600 and right now she can't affort to put over $2000 in the car since you still need to replace the T-belt and etc with the swap.....
I have found several 2000 engines for under $250 with broken T-belts, so with pretty much a complete rebuild will be around $1000, but to do this I need to know what to expect! if it were my car I would just jump in and go for it!
