Default The way the engine is designed....

Has the space that the valves occupy when fully open, overlap with the area occupied by the piston at TDC (top dead center). So, if the timing belt blows, there is the possibility that the shift in rythym could have the valves slam into the pistons at the wrong moment. High compression engines are usually designed this way, and the 5 valve is no exception. The 1.8 is a long stroke if I'm not mistaken.

If your worried, trust me, you'd KNOW it if you had this happen to you. You would NOT be able to use your motor.
