is 18x8.5 rims too wide for the a4?

Not ideal...8" is perfect...but there are people running 8.5"...
I used to have rims that were 8.5" and the rims stuck out farther then the tires. You can always run a wider tire, but then be prepared for some fender scraping.

i'm running 18x8.5 also right now, car is lowered a little over 2 inches with koni COs
I only rub under hard cornering, or any other maneuver that requires full suspension travel. Doesnt happen that much. I'll be rolling my fenders soon.

Re: is 18x8.5 rims too wide for the A4?
18x8.5 is fine as long as the offset is 32 - 35mm. You can pretty much put 18x10 if you wanted to with a 36mm offset...offset is always key when fitting any rim.
