Worse thing that could happen is it doesn't help. So you have wasted $5 and an hour or two.

You could probably get a used throttle body at a junk yard. The VW Passat uses the same one as does the A6.

Here's one

They are different for Auto/ 5 speed. I think you can either one on the 5 speed, but the auto can only use the correct one.
ok, well Iam sitting here looking at this throttle body confused, after pulling it out of the car, I dont understand what could go wrong with it? Is there any visual thing I can see to tip me off, or is it just a guess type thing?

The throttle plates should open without sticking at all. If it's gummed up the movement will not be smooth. Make sure it's fully opening and closing. The electronics on the throttle body has a potentiometer to measure position and a switch to measure closed.

I am going to check clean mine this weekend and have just one question. When cleaning out the hole through the throttle body will the wire go all the way through to the EGR valve. I guess what I'm asking is how will you know when you have got it clean?

Assume you are removing the EGR valve and throttle body.

All of the removed crud will fall out at the EGR end.\

A thinnish wire should make it all the way through, but it does make a 90 degree turn at the throttle body.

If a lot of black crud comes out you are good.
