1996 Automatic Transmission Slippage
I have a 1996 2.8L V6 with 119K, mostly highway, miles. Just replaced the tie rod ends myself this weekend. Within 10 minutes of putting the car down and getting it aligned, I drove it around and the it felt as if the transmission was not engaging from a stop. It shifts hard at speed too. Happens more often from a roll than from a stop.
Can't think of anything I could have done to cause it. Could it be anything other than needing a new transmission? Anyone had a tranny rebuild or replaced and know about how much that would run?

Is it in 'limp home mode'? Look at the PNRD432 on the dash, is it all lit up as one, or are the
individual P N R D 4 3 2 lit up? If it is lit up all as one, it is in Limp home mode. If not, I would suggest calling someone that is VERY familiar with Audi Automatic transmissions.

Nope...
I just went out to the car and checked. Each gear lights up individually as I cycle through them. So much for a cheap fix? What about a flush and refill on the trans. fluid?

My Girlfriend's cavalier (I know...) had the same problem.
It had hard time accelerating from stand still (slipping) and was very rough during shifts.
Took it to the local tranny shop and they found that something inside of it (some little bul**** thing) had to be replaced. I know its not much help, cause I can not recall what exactly was broken, but tranny was not rebuild nor was it replaced, they simply took it appart and replaced "that" little thing. Most of the cost was for labor and the total came out to 700CAD (450USD), but keep in mind that it is for a Cavalier.
Hope this helped, or atleast gave you some peace of mind.
