2000 A4 Auto Transmission Dead. $10K repair/ any known tranny problems on these cars?

My friend had his tranny die with low mileage after the warrenty expired. After fighting with Audi they agreed to pay for 1/2. If there are many others with similar problems I feel that Audi should cover it.

what broke? It would be cheaper to get a used tranny swapped in
