The 2002 A4 1.8tqm weighs 165lbs more than 2001 and same engine 170hp, but 2002 Jetta has 180hp WTF?

this isn't that difficult..
Car is heavier because it's larger, and there's other things that have been added.
Car is still 170HP because Audi left it that way. They could have make it 180HP if they wanted. The VW's are 180HP because they are traverse mounted and some other things about it, even though it's the 1.8T engine.
If you care that much about the 10HP, buy a Jetta or Passat.
The A4 is Audi's entry level car. The Passat is VW's HIGHEST level car and it's the A4's rival (not the Jetta, different platform). Keep that in mind.

Rating the engine hp is all marketing..
Get that car on a dyno becomes a different story. 10hp difference isn't that much. It all depends on where you live that affects hp. If you get both those cars on the dyno on the same day same dyno it'll probably put out same numbers. I think the Audi's 1.8 is rated at 170 simply because they didn't want to hurt the 2.8 sales... Besides just put a chip in that sucka and you'll be happy =)

For me personally the extra weight is a drawback.
I think the current A4s were porky enough and now you add more weight to the same engine. It would be tough for someone to convince me to buy the new 2002 1.8T A4. I would want the 3.0 version, but then you have to look at cost. Seems to be too close to $40,000 when you add everything you want.,..and then you might as well get an S4.

Jetta and Golf will probably have 3.2L V6 option next year, Audi won't.....
I really don't know where Audi's corporate road map is going! Audi is suppose to be the BMW beater and VW goes after Mercedes. It looks like VW is going after both. I wouldn't surprise me if VW unloads the Audi divison to some other US car company!

Are you sure the Passat is transverse?
Perhaps there may be another theory as to where the 10 hp is coming from?

http://www.vw.com/passat/usaspecs.htm#tech</a
