30K Service: $450? Too much?
Hullo,
Love my recently acquired 1998.5 A4 2.8Q tiptronic. Now at 27,000-odd miles, it's time to start thinking about the 30K service (and getting some TSB items replaced, like the remote key antenna and the throttle body cleaning).
Called the dealer today and they quoted $450 for the 30K service. This seems a bit high. Here's what the service manual says needs to be done:
- Oil change (I'll bring my own Mobile 1 10W-30)
- Reset Service Reminder Indicator display
- Rotate wheels
- Check coolant, hydraulic brake, windshield washer, power steering; add if necessary (all are fine-- just checked them)
- Check operation of Automatic shift lock
- Engine: check for leaks (eh? is it peeing?)
- Exhaust System: check for damage and leaks
- Purge diagnostic codes, if necessary (it's not)
- Replace dust and pollen filter
- Replace air cleaner filter element
- Replace spark plugs (I'll bring my own)
- Check dust seals on ball joints and tie rod ends, check tie rod ends
- Replace brake fluid (since it may have been >2 years)
Soo... $450 seems a bit high. I have Audi Assured -- I guess this service isn't covered since I mentioned the AA and the price was $450. Is my AA warranty OK with getting this done at a 3rd party shop? I have no problem getting the TSB stuff done (at the dealership) seperate from the 30K service if that makes sense.
Help me, oh wise audi drivers.

I had mine in for its 60K a few weeks ago and...
it was worth it. I felt like I was getting shafted at first, but durring the service they found three problems...
Valve Cover Gaskets
Cam Tensioner Gasket
Rear Differential Seals
All together it was like a grans worth of work that was covered under the assured warrenty. It turned out good for me cause I know I would not have picked up on all those issues myself.
