51st tint question of the week:
Will tinting my windows impair the operation of the auto dimming mirrors? Maybe I should go conservative on mine, eh?
I mean, that's one of my FAVORITE features. I waited for the 2K just for that feature. I'd hate to mess it up.

Based on light transmission
Seems to me since the sensor that determines how much to dim the mirrors is located in the rearview mirror itself it shouldnt matter. The amount they dim is how much light hits that sensor so if there is less light coming through the glass they are going to dim slightly less. They will still work, there will just be less of an effect because of the reduced light coming into the car.

The reason I ask is:
Because I really really like the side mirrors darkening. While the net difference would be the same for the rearview mirror, the sides won't since I can't tint those windows in this silly state.
I was thinking, maybe the sensor doesn't actually require that much light to trigger the full dimming. I know! I could get some samples and put them on the sensor at night and see what happens.
I'll let you guys know the results.

Oh, didnt realize you cant tint the sides..
that being the case then you would notice a difference on the side mirrors. Your idea is great, just get a small piece of tint and put it over the sensor for a few nights.. see what effect it has..

here's a thought....
not a suggestion but a thought, would it make sense to cut a piece of small tint and put it in front of the front sensor?
ie. you tint 20% all around, you cut a piece of 20% tint and put infront of the front sensor.
this should compensate for the rear tint and the operation of the auto-dimming mirrors should be retained.
this makes sense logically... but in reality i dunno if it would work.

there's two sensors.....
one is on the front of the rear view and one behind. the circuitry compares light (voltage) between the two sensors and dims if the difference is greater (by a certain delta)
compensating for the rearward tint by tinting the front sensor will give you the same results with out tinting the car at all.
anyway, i have 20% in the back and 32% on the sides. the autodimming mirror still work fine.
