ok, looking at this car for a friend, a few months age the car tranny quit, he has now rebuilt the tranny and the car still only has reverse, same as when he brought it to the shop. I get no Vag codes except intermitent brake switch. component tests comes out fine, I don't have bently for this car, but I assume it's the miltifunction switch, but the car is not in limp, in understand their is a early and a late 96 trans computer setup and this is the early (supposabley non-programable)all the dash indicator lights function properly, he pulled the TR switch out and opened it up and cleaned it, they put it back in and still no go. I did not see the internals of the switch, and am probably still leaning towards the tr switch, can this be tested? and how? any other ideas? sugestions. I can test vlave body soliniods by Vag, and it works he has swapped the tranny ecu and no effect. is thier a ground someplace to look at?

My symptoms were not the same, I had all gears except for 5th, and my gear indicator on my dash was all lit up too. But after changing the brake switch (~$20 from what I was told) all was fine. You might want to start with that.

I heard of, and experienced, some strange electrical problems, but replace the brake switch to fix gear selection problems??? I'll keep that one in mind...
I've had intermitant problems with gear selection myself, had the multi-funtion switch replaced last June, worked fine for a while then started missing gears and jumping around as I shifted (4th to drive would shift to N),
was told that the wire harness running under the tranny was oil soaked and shorting, seemed true as I cleaned it up and it worked better, except now it will go into safe mode only when shifting into reverse when cold, I got tired of screwing with it so I just make sure I always back in to a spot and can drive straight out...
I can live with that...
