97 A4 1.8T problem (long)
Hi All,
A couple problems here to see if someone can give me some suggestions. My car is 97 A4 1.8T Auto with 147,544 miles.
1. Stall, hesitations: This happened when the car is hot. For example, start the car cold (car starts fine), drive 20 minutes, stop the car. Start the car again within 5 minutes, the car alsomst stall, the rpm drop to like 200/300, add some gas, then the idle rpm back to normal. Now put the gear in R, slowly back up the car, the engine will almost stall(but it won't really died).
2. White smokes. This only happen after a long downhill. I notice everytime I come down an long downhill, stop at a light (or stop sign), after I hit the gas, there are white smoke coming out for about 1~2 seconds.
Any hints on what the problem might be? THanks.

see if you can find someone with a vagcom....
or go to the dealer to check for codes. this sounds like an idle control valve problem to me. could be several other things though. i.e. O2 sensors' gaskets etc. check for oil in the coolant or vice versa!

Clean your throttle body - that will fix #1
if it is basically an idle problem. This is a common problem. If it hass issues while driving in higher rpms then it could be summin else.
#2 sounds scary - is that the original turbo? Are you losing oil??

The turbo was replace at 30K under warranty.
I was losing oil and had both valve cover gesket and head gasket replaced about 6 month ago.

Had O2 senser replaced about three months ago, no oil in the coolant. Just had my 150K miles service done at an independent shop two weeks ago, no code found.
