98 1.8T strange burning smell....
This is very odd. Lately I notice a burning smell only when my car is on a very steep incline or hill (I live in San Fran). I notice this especially when I am stopped. It goes away quickly once things level out again.
What could this be? My engine oil is slightly overfilled -- could this be the cause?
Thanks,
Jason

Might have some oil dripping down on your exhaust & (m)...
When you're parked, the stink will come in through the cabin filter. It's common for the valve cover gasket to leak back towards the firewall. You can't see the mess unless you *really* look closely... but you'd be surprised how much oil pools up back there & gets blown around under the car.

I guess part 2 of my question is -- is a valve cover gasket leak harmful? I can live with it for now. I just dont have any spare $$$ to go through an expensive fix.
