98.5 1.8T Quattro ECU Test
Hi,
I was wondering if someone could point me in the direction of how to test the ECM/ECU on this car. I bought this car and was told it had a bad ECU because a power wired grounded against the bell housing. Is there a way to check/test the ECU. All the internal functions of the car work, it cranks, just won't start. I believe the person I bought it from because they were able to show me the estimate from the mechanic, but looked up the mechanic and found out they were not an Audi specialist which leads me to believe they may be just guessing.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you,

If your engine is cranking and lights etc. work you may have stumbled on a gem. A used ECM is not costly though. You should scan the car for error codes with vagcom software. If you don't have a vagcom cable and are planning on DIY'ing the repair on this car, this should be the first thing you do!
Other than the ECU being bad, a simple engine speed sensor (crank position sensor) will keep the car from starting if the ECU can't read signal from it. It isn't hard to change, nor is it pricey. I think it took me 20 minutes in the windy snowy and muddy driveway.
You NEED to get a vagcom cable, and I'd place a small bet on a new engine speed sensor. Click here for a new sensor and scan cable.
