Default '98 A4 - How much to replace stock sport shocks (with stock)? Springs also?

Well with 116K miles on my car my shocks are pretty well shot. I have the factory sport suspension. The car has seen a lot of rough roads and the occasional pothole, as well as a LOT of bouncing since the shocks have been shot for a while. So I am considering replacing the springs also.

I am happy with the stock sport suspension and I don't track the car, so I would like to keep it stock.

How much might I expect this to cost at a dealer?

I called mine to get a quote Thursday morning, but due to unforseen mayhem (the door to the shop broke down, causing mayhem getting the cars in and out) they have not had a chance to get the quote together yet.

Thanks!
Paul

Default how many $100 bills can you hold in your right fist?

thats about how much it is going to cost for parts and labor

say 10 hours of labor at $90 an hour

say $200 per corner for oe shocks (more probably)

lets not forget new hardware.... new tie rod ends (I'm sure yours are shot.

lets add in a $200 alignment

hmmm yes you should have this done for the $2K .... your dealership will love you (and I will think lowly of you)

Default At the dealer?

Well, first, your spring will probably still be good. Generally, they are good for the life of the car, unless a defect (collapsed coils, cracked spring) develops. Shocks will probably run you about $700, and probably another $600 for installation and alignment.

My suggestion would be to find a low mileage set of used shocks on AW, and have an independent mechanic do the work. Induktion is located outside BWI airport...they might be able to do the work for you...and they might even be helpful in sourcing new or used parts at good prices.

Default What dealership have you been going to?

thats much too kind.

Euro Parts direct has the rear shocks "listing" at $350 each and they sell em for $245.

So lets be honest here

$600 for rear shocks (more than a set of bilsteins from purems.com or konis or the same from ecstuning.com)

$350 or so for the fronts (nearly as much as a set of bilsteins.

So thats $950 for OE shocks!!!

Lets say 10 hours for doing all of them (the technician will make time and lots of $$$ on this genious)...... this is good business!

So $950 + 940 for labor + 200 for an alignment = well over $2K + tax so figure no less than $2200 for replacing the stock sport suspension.

what the dealer is going to try and get him to do is to do his tie rod ends too (prolly done).... So lets say $300 for that ok ok $375 parts and labor if they arent feeling too starved for raping his wallet even more

So I'd say his original plan should fleece him for geee $2500

Or if he has it done at an independent shop $500 for some bilsteins and $250 for installation and $90 for an alignment = $840

Default Actually, my dealership is a little kinder than yours...

They usually give me 10-20% off on parts...depending on the part. No special considerations, that just how they price parts. If a part is particularly expensive, or I'm buying a lot of stuff...all I have to do is ask, and they'll usually work with me. Anyway, where your dealer might charge $1100, mine would likely charge $900.

Labor...I've been through this with them before. Talked them down to $500.

Alignment...$150, but there are others that will do it for $100.

But none of that really touches on our point...which is, the dealer will rape him, and there are better options. He should really contact Induktion to explore those options.
