FWIW, I have had two laptops (first one stolen), neither of which had a serial port. I found a Belkin USB>Serial adapter, part number F5U103, and it has worked just fine with both laptops. Unfortunately that is an old adapter and is no longer produced. If you can find one it will likely work with the SONY's USB ports.
You might look at Belkin's site for current offerings. From what I gather folks have had mixed results with using the VagCom thru a port emulator but I've had good success with the Belkin ...
