A4 1st gear noise
Hi - I'm thinking of buying a 1998 A4 that has a noisy first gear (why? - because price is very good) and have a couple of questions that I hope the forum can answer. Transmission is a 5-speed manual unit.
- does the problem get worse to the point where something has to be done or does it just remain a background annoyance?
- is it possible to strip the transmission and replace faulty parts or is the only option a replacement transmission? Are parts even available?
Thanks
Vic Norman

Re: What engine? 1.8 or 2.8? My 2.8 sounds like a diesel clacking away in 1st gear.....
It's the 2.8 V6 engine. Forgot to mention that it's a quattro, if that makes any difference.

Check my thread about 5 up from yours! I have had a 2.8 5speed quattro from 48000miles to 121,000 miles. THe noise in first gear is noticeable to me. I have never had a passenger mention it but I sure notice it. Sound has not changed during the 73,000 miles I have been driving it.
My opinion is that Audi used a "straight cut gear". These are noisy but have stronger teeth than gears which one quieter. Seeing as how if you decide to launch an all wheel drive car the gear is going to take a beating I believe it was purposeful. However, I did decide to post to ask the question myself. Good Luck.

I first noticed it when rolling down my window and 1st gear driving along side my wife. It reflected off of her car and had a sorta 'wheel of fortune' sound about it.
I've heard many automatics wine louder - but your theory on the why makes sense, and if I get 73K from this 98 I will be happy (prolly will in about 2 or 3 years).
