Default ABS Speed Sensor Removal

What is the best way to remove a rear speed sensor for the ABS system without damaging it? Is there a special tool or technique? I thought all I needed to do was pry gently and it would come out.

Default a comment...

I don't know if there is a special tool. They tend to be rusted or stuck with a bucket load of corrosion. I hit it with lots of liquid wrench(or equivalent) many hours before removal. Once the allen or hex head bolt is removed, try turning it from side to side, just a bit. This will usually allow you to walk it out without damage. Then clean up the hub area where the sensor is installed and the sensor.
I am assuming from your post you already have the bolt out. So, there was little explanation for removing stuborn bolts. Hope this helps

Default Take special care. I damaged one. Do not twist too strong

using wrench (I damaged mine this way as I can not move it a bit using hand). If the sensor is really firmly rusted in its hole, I would suggest to take the A-arm (hub?) off, discennect it from the CV-joint (need to loose the axle bolt before jacking up), and try to clean the sensor from the CV-joint hole of the A-arm, or use a short bolt to drive the sensor out from inside the CV-joint hole of the A-arm. Use a lot of chemical to loose it in advance.

Default OK -- so I'm a noob...

I'm a pretty good mechanic -- I've rebuilt my Alfa Romeo 164 so it hummed before I sold it to get my 98 A4. My other car is an old Fiat! Nuff about that. I didn't realize that the sensor is attached with an Allen head or hex nut. Where is it located? I thought you just slid the sensor out.

As far as removal of the hub goes, I've done that before -- no sweat. Wheel bearings are fine and so are the cv joints. No need to replace them at this time.

Do you think that just cleaning the speed sensor will be enough to fix the problem? I was thinking of buying 1 or 2 new ones and just replacing them.

Default iirc they're $210 each. what's the problem? ....

iirc the connectors for the rear sensors are under the rear seat. you may find it easier to remove them if you disconnect them first.

I need to change the bearings on a 98 Audi A4 2.8 front passenger side. In order to do that I need to remove the ABS front wheel speed sensor It looks like its being held in with 3 shims don't see anything else holding it in. Will not budge. Anyone have any ideas, thanks.

This applies to my 2001 1.8. The front sensor just slides out, mine came out with some light oil and a twisting motion. The back two are a little more tricky, lots of oil and a 5mm allen wrench preferably on a tool with some type of impact. Once the allen bolt is removed sharpen a flat head screw driver (or use a small one) and gently tap all around the metal housing until loosened. GENTLY work the sensor out and clean/replace. Not sure if this helps...

On my '01 the drivers side was silicone'd in and I had to destroy it to get it out.
