Default AC Compressor/programming/PN question

I am replacing my AC compressor tomorrow. The one that's in my car is the Zexel compressor (the one that requires a pin wrench to remove). I have not yet received the new one.
If both compressors are the same, is it more cost-efficient to change the AC clutch (assuming I have to buy the pin wrenches, pullers, and misc parts that have to be replaced any time the system is reinstalled) rather than paying a mechanic to discharge the AC system?
If I get a Denso compressor, can I make whatever programming changes are necessary without a VAG-COM?
Regardless, there are probably parts that I will need- crush rings, washers, etc. Cand someone post part numbers for what I need in either case? Thanks!

You sure you have a Zexel compressor? They were fased out back in 96 and you have a 2k car

Default Went by the picture in the Bentley. No, I'm not sure.

There are 2 pix in the Bentley- zexel has a very involved and almost artistic-looking clutch plate. The Denso looks like a boring old pulley. My compressor has the fancy clutch plate... I'm basing everything on that, but could easily be wrong. I'll take any guidance I can get!

get underneath the car and look at the compressor - it should have a plate or stamp with the info

Will do. Should I use some Autozone AC flush & clean?

Not sure why you'd need it at this point, - all you need right now is a rag to wipe the compressor
