Advice on parting out 99.5 Avant
#21
you know that if they DO total the car, you can't just start picking off what you want...unless you replace the items and if you go that route, it needs to be done before it's in there hands (ie: swap aftermarket stereo, wheels etc.) They give you a value of the car in its current condition...
If there is a fine line between totaling it and repairing it, hope that they total it (maybe persuade the mechanic to "find" something.)
If they total it, most ins companies will allow you to buy the car back. If you do that, you can have it repaired yourself (body shop of your choise) and probably not shell out any money when all is said and done. It may even keep a clear title and put a few bucks in your pocket... look into it.

Sorry not to have updated in an easier place to see:
Latest is that State Farm is having my shop take another look for hidden damage. If none is found they may approve the repair rather than totalling it. I'd prefer this, I have confidence the car will be repaired to GWO and though it ain't perfect the Avant is the car I know--and pretty certainly better (for me) than anything I could replace it with for $10K or less.
If SF wants to total it I expect to negotiate with them and perhaps be able to pull some items, particularly if I can replace them. IE pull the RS4 grill, put the stock one back on, same with the wheels/tires, Chipped ECU, maybe a few other things. Probably not mechanical components. Another possibility of course is to but it back and have the work done myself.
Ugh...even a 'minor' accident is a major PITA.
Thanks for the interest, I'll update when I know what's up.

If they elect to repair, strongly consider cashing the check and selling the car as is or parting it out. It may be cheaper/better to buy something else. Of course, this is driven by the size of the check and availability of other avants.

Well, the news from the shop and ins company was not good. Radiator + AC + body work including frame rail = $9K. They're offering $8500 + tax and title transfer. Considering what a car of this age sells for...that's not too bad.
They are willing to let me pull things I can replace, so I can't offer any body or interior or mechanical parts, sorry.
I will be posting in the classifieds the things I can pull, but most of these would only work with a local (Chicago) buyer:
APR chipped ECU (swap for stock), 17" Ace Lolas/Bridgestone 960AS (really a shame to waste these), RS4 grill, 6-disc CD changer.
There was a very nice looking 2001 Avant in Cactus Green that sold on Ebay this week for under $7K. Unless I find a deal like that--on a car I'm confident in--I'm likely to leave the Audi fold. Sniff!
Check out my profile pic--I think the B5 Avant was a classic looking car and I really enjoyed 8.5 years of ownership.

Hey Alan
Sorry to hear about your A4, that is a really nice car, I love mine!
I could really use a good front drivers seat. I know you probably don't want to get into pulling all that stuff out but I live in Milwaukee and I would make the drive down to pick it up and pull it out if you have time for that. Let me know!
