air bags deployed

air bags deployed
My wife was in an accident the other night while driving my 96 QM. A woman turned left right in front of her and there was no way to avoid the collision (at 35-40 mph). Fortunately, no one was seriously hurt. The car did its job well.
Both air bags deployed and I noticed one strange thing. Looks like the hinged panel for the passenger side bag broke the windshield when it swung up out of the way of the bag. Anyone else experienced this? Not complaining, since everything worked well. Just odd that they would design it this way.
Hoping car will be better than new when repaired. But doubtful...

Those bags deploy with such force that I would imagine it's pretty common for that to happen.
Although I've never seen one actually go off, it's kind of surprising though to imagine that kind of power sitting right in front of you. Good thing she wasn't seriously hurt though, you must be very thankful to someone (obviously not the other driver).

Passenger-side airbags are usually designed to bounce off the windshield, but (more)
if the windshield just flies off the car, then the airbag will not do its job properly. Do you have a whole in the windshield or just a big indentation?

Look at the size of the vent holes in the bag. Imagine the force needed to fill the bag with (M)
...such large holes. Airbag goes from rest to deployed to deflated in less than a second.
Glad everyone is OK.
On a funny note I use to see deployed airbags come in all the time for replacement at the dealer I worked at and a lot would have really nice lipstick imprints of a mouth.
Remeber they are supplemental restraint devices, made to be used in conjunction with seat belt. Also remember to have the head restraint positioned properly.
Once again glad she is OK.

Just look at what those things do to rearward facing child seats? Glass is nothing.
