The snowflake I talked of was the one on the LCD console between the driver and co-driver seats - I have never seen a snowflake on my console above the steering wheel.

Sorry also if I was not clear enough when say that "I took the car back to the garage and they bled the AC system." - what I meant was they hooked it up to a machine that sucked out all the gas in the AC system.

I have made an appointment with an Audi garage for the 10th of December when they will check out the AC issue.

I appreciate any clues as to what is going on. I sincerely hope it's not the compressor gone bad.

Oh, and I live in Switzerland ... and it's about 1-5C during the day here

Jackeroo sounding Australian - your right - I lived there for 7 years.
There is refrigerant and PAG oil in the compressor, it's possible that with all the screw ups you are now low on oil which is why it's noisy

Ok, but why is the AC turning off after 5 - 8 min of running?

I've only ever seen the frost warning once on the DIS of my S8, when it was about 4 degrees C, wet and foggy.
My B5 is pre DIS...

So did you work on any cattle or sheep stations while you were here?

No, I was studying/working in IT there.

What is the "DIS"?

Driver Information System - it's a small LCD (or better) screen nestled between the tacho and speedo on the dash.
They started in the late 90's on Audi's and were quite basic pixellated screens showing basic information such as the trip computer functions and minor car problems such as bulb warning and washer empty, as well as more serious problems such as low oil and the CEL (Check Engine Light).
Modern ones are much higher resolution, full colour, and show radio information, GPS, gear selection and any number of other bits of information...

Interesting. I have this rectangular LCD in the middle of the speedometer and the rev thing (tacho?). It seems to be able to only show red and orange colours. One thing I was wondering is why my LCD doesn't display the gears (my car is auto transmission). Is this something I have to turn on or enable to get that info to show?

Rev Thing = Tachometer - Yes!

Gear selection may not be an option on the early screens. Or it may only be applicable on tiptronic (manual sequential mode) transmissions.
The one on my S8 only shows it to be in 'D' in normal driving, then gives the gear selection in manual mode.

That's where all the warnings are supposed to show up. Also radio stations etc. In the cheaper models they didn't always have them. Every market that cars were sold in differs somewhat, a 98.5 V6 (Feb 98 onwards) would have one in the US. Alternatively someone switched the clusters at some point. And didn't install the ribbon cable.

Mine shows alerts and warnings etc, but if everything is working fine it only shows an initial message saying something (in German) about stepping on the brake before changing gears, then says OK in orange, and then nothing.

I have not tried switching to tiptronic so I don't know if it shows the gears then .. but will try ...

Would the radio stations only show up in the DIS if the car stereo was the original one? - 'Cause right now it's got an aftermarket stereo and I see no radio station info in the DIS.

If it's a red/orange pixellated display it probably won't show radio stations.

You would need factory radio to stand a chance though, as it would need to be CANBUS (communications bus) compatable.
