Ok, I had my car into the Audi Garage today - it was for something else (ABS module replacement) but I got some info from them about my AC "issue".
According to what I understood they said that the AC is not meant to run in temps below 5°C (41°F). They said that this could be why it only runs for 5 - 8 min before turning off.
Can anyone confirm that this is true? If so this basically means that the AC is useless through winter which is when you need it for defogging the inside of the windows, especially when you have a few people in the car and it's cold outside.
Is there a trick to defogging the inside of the windows without using the AC?

Does recirculate work when the AC is not on your car? On early cars it didn't work.
If not you can recode the climate control with VAG.com to make recirc work without AC. It helps with defrost.

I can't look it up right at the moment, but there is a way to read fault codes out of your HVAC controller. You have the 2-window variety, right? On my older B4 I had a similar problem where the AC compressor would shut off after 5 minutes, I thought low pressure switch. But I read out the fault codes and the system detected the belt was slipping. Since the serpentine belt in that V6 B4 runs all the accessories, its probably a safety thing.
So the noise may be signs of compressor failure which would cause a belt slip, too.
Just my 2 cents.
