Default Is the Alternator belt tensioner & roller assembly the same as the serpentine tensioner?

The Alternator belt tensioner & roller assembly is the closest thing I can find at ECS for that whistling sound. I called up ECS but the guy didn't sound too sure if they were the same or not.

Thanks

Default ..this is the exact question I have. As I am doing the TB/belts/tensioners myself in a couple weeks

I am yet to find the specific 'serpentine' tensioner, I think it's the same tensioner, but I need to make sure as well since I have that annoying 3k whistle. I have been waiting to do the timing belt to replace this part.

Yes, it's the same tensioner. The secondary tensioner only secures the a/c belt.

Default That tensiner is not replaced w/ the TB. It's a seperate big, spring loaded one.

You'll see it on the front of the motor when you get everything apart.

Default Nope, look below. There are a total of 3 tensioners on the front.

The main access. belt tensioner on the front of the motor. A smaller manual tensioner for the a/c belt and the timing belt tensioner under the cover.

Default oh.. ok. this is the info I needed. It's only $58 at ECS for the tensioner and roller.

I assume it comes with the belt. Looks like I will have a lot of fun replacing tensioners! Thanks for the info Ron.<ul><li><a href="http://www.ecstuning.com/stage/edpd/pagebuild_v2.cgi?searchstring=tensioner&amp;search qt=byvehicle&amp;make=Audi&amp;model=B5+A4&amp;sub model=Quattro&amp;engine=1.8T">http://www.ecstuning.com/stage/edpd/pagebuild_v2.cgi?searchstring=

Default Yep, that would be the big one on the front.

Yours is squeaking?

Default I wouldn't call it a 'squeak', it's a whistle at 3k RPM before car warms up on cold days.

It sounds as if you were to blow over a plastic soda bottle. It's quit annoying when I take off to work/school and I am running late like every day, and I need to hit 3k in the cold. God knows we have enough cold weather to trigger that sound in CHI-town too. I have heard that this could be related to belt condensation, because it does go away when the car warms up, and is not noticable or heard at ALL in the spring/summer. It'll get replaced soon tho.. I will take pics and have a short write-up to follow.

So are you saying its OK to buy the Alternator belt tensioner &amp; roller assembly kit to replace the serpentine belt tensioner? They are the same part??
I already had the timing belt done and I'm just doing this now cause its really annoying.

Thanks!
