Alan, why pay big $ for HomeLink when good cheap options exist...
My last 3 cars have had a Homelink transmitters and I like them a lot. I was dissapointed when I couldn't get it for my 99.5 A4.
THE FIX
I went to Sears and bought a tiny battery operated remote opener called SKYLINK for $20. It is designed to be part of a keychain and is about the size of your A4 switchblade remote. I put double sided velcro tape on it (for easy removal to replace the battery) and taped it to the drivers side lower door storage compartments back wall. It is out of sight and I find it a very easy place to reach to click it. This unit is only for one door opener. There was also a unit called CLICKER at Sears that - like the HomeLink device - has 3 buttons for three devices. It was larger and I didn't need 3 buttons...but it too was pretty small.
I did have to replace the battery after 3 months ($2 at Radio Shack) but this could be because it came w/ a cheapo no-name battery and/or may have sat on the shelf a while.
Don't get me wrong, I would have preferred that my A4 came w/ HomeLink like the MY2000, but truth is this is just fine. Know what, I'm actually beginning to prefer not having the clunky plastic bezel of the homelink transmitter staring at me from the visor. You know Audi will charge an arm and a leg for the new sunvisor w/ homelink and how well will it color match with your current passenger visor? I say... fugetaboudit...get this Skylink clicker for $20, Velcro tape for $1, and be happy.
