I've had this in my 99.5 1.8T QMS since new 6 months ago. It's so loud at times that it can startle me. It seems to happen most when I'm at a light idling with clutch out for a couple of minutes. Then when I put it in first gear and let out the clutch it makes a very loud squeal like a belt slipping. Somebody metioned he had his belt tensioner replaced. Any others experience this? I wish someone would find the cause and post it. It's really bugging me.

Yeah I had the same problem, and I've seen that a few people on this board {or slightly more than a few}. Andy Hedin posted that it was a belt tensioner, one or two other people seemed to believe that it was some other problem. Mine just sort of went away. I heard it for the first 5,000 miles and now its gone. Good luck!

I have also heard it after shifting into 2nd. Kind of a whirring noise, not very loud so far. Made a post but nobody responded. I wonder if this unique to '99s.
