Anyone direct me to a list of things to look out for when buying...
an A4? I'm looking at 1999-2001. I've just sold my beloved BMW 740i and am thinking strongly about getting something smaller. The A4 seems to be just the right blend. But I guess I really need to know whether there are certain recurring problems. Any engine or transmission problems that come up? Recalls? I've also not checked to see if the engine uses a timing chain that doesn't need to be replaced. Any other quirks?
Someone has probably already posted a list of this sort of thing, but I couldn't find it on the archive search. I was pretty involved in the 7 series discussion forum over at Roadfly and I admit coming here is like starting at a new school when one is a kid.
Any help would be highly appreciated!

you can check recalls...
through edmunds.com
timing belt: 1.8t replaced every 60k, 2.8 70-80k.
there's a buying guide in the FAQ. If you search for "B5 FAQ" you'll find what you need.
Are you looking at keeping it stock? I think coming from a 740 that either motor stock will be a little lackluster in comparison.

someone needs to take that thread as a guidance but add more to it, from the common problems section
and also provide pics of damage vs new and signs and symptoms that way we will RULE the b5 world again!
