Default Is anyone running without an exhaust flex joint ?

Mine broke twice and the last time it was in to be repaired they just replaced it with a solid section. (without saying anything - the wife dropped off the car) It's been running like that for probably 30,000 miles with no issues but now that I've noticed it I'm looking at having a flex joint reinstalled.

Default a comment....

It should not be a problem as long as your driveline mounts are in good shape. You might consider upgrading them. Just because the flex joint is gone, puts the stress points in different locations, especially if your twisting the rpms up on the higher side.

Default I know of one person with a 2001 1.8T Passat without a flex pipe.

I think he is using a 3" downpipe but I'm not certain which exhaust he is using.

I have a flexible section in my 3" downpipe.

Default

Better have some stiff mounts if you don't run one.

Default I don't have any on my BMW..

In fact the standard E30 M3's don't have any at all. And they do have some surprising engine movement as well.

They run a standard 4-2 header then 2 pipes all the way back with no flex anywhere. Kinda surprised myself, but it seems to work.

Default My 73 SAAB 99EMS was that way from the factory @ 88k miles ,I'd replaced front pipe 3 times.

the time that it broke when I was playing rally driver was the bad one. The front 2-into-1 pipe broke there and caught the ground at 50 mph on a dirt road . It wrapped the exhaust in a pretzel around the rear axle . It was a loud drive home and took sawing the pipe to get it off. I then had to install an entire new exhaust except for being able to save the muffler.
